General Information

The Republic of Uzbekistan is a young state of the region of Central Asia that has only become independent after the disintegration of the USSR in 1991.

The territory of Uzbekistan is 447.4 thousand km2. Between the southern and the northern geographic extremes of the country lies a distance of 925km while it is 1,400km wide west to east. The ultimate low locality is in the natural depression of Mingbulak in the desert of Central Kizilkums (12m below see level). The most high point (4643m-high above sea level) located in the mountains of Gissar Range (Surhandarya province in the south). Uzbekistan borders on the neighbouring countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan.

The state language is Uzbek. Russian is a language of interethnic communication for representatives of more than 100 nations and nationalities living on territory of the Republic. The population of Uzbekistan is more than 25 million, rural population of which makes 60%. There are 16 major cities having population of more than 100 thousand people. The dominating religion of the country is Islam.

Uzbekistan consists of 12 administrative regions (viloyats) and the Karakalpak Autonomous Republic.

Climate in Uzbekistan is a continental type with a short cold winter and a hot long summer. Average air temperature in January reaches 2° to 3°C. Average July temperatures vary from 30° to 32°C. Average atmospheric precipitation varies up to 900mm in mountainous areas and 200-300mm on the plains.
