The Facilities
Kashmir
Kashmir lies at the western end of the Greater Himalayan range,
in northern India. Set like a jeweled crown on the map of India,
Kashmir is always extravagantly beautiful no matter what season
you visit her. Three Himalayan ranges; Karakoram, Zanaskar and
Pir Panjal provide a snow capped, majestic landscape unlike any
other.
Gulmarg Gulmarg is the Himalaya’s
‘premier ski resort’ in winter and ‘the meadow
of flowers’ in summer. Gulmarg is a hill station in the
Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The town is nestled in the Greater Himalayan range and is known
for its unparalleled beauty which is why it is rated as one of
the matchless tourist spots of India.
The altitude of Gulmarg is 2650m, and is situated along the Pir
Panjal mountain range from which Mount Apherwat rises to 4124m.
‘Highest ski lift in the World’
Gulmarg boasts the World’s ‘highest operational ski
lift’. Designed by France’s Poma Group, it ascends
from Gulmarg’s 2650m base, via a mid-station and restaurant,
to an altitude of 3980m. With a vertical drop of over 1300m, the
newly constructed 2nd phase of the gondola now means that you
have more adrenalin-rushing terrain amongst the World’s
highest mountain range.
The
terrain - a true free-riding, on-piste heli-skiing experience
As one heli-skiing operator once mentioned to us, “Gulmarg’s
snow terrain is just like heli-skiing without a helicopter!!”
Gulmarg’s Himalayan powder is incredibly abundant due
in part because of its altitude and geographical location. Being
situated along the western most part of the Himalayas, the Pir
Panjal mountain range’s snow storms provide consistent powder
cover across the resort. In fact one of our motto’s at Currypowder
is ‘the bog-gage is the baggage!!!’ Too much powder
can ‘bog’ the uninitiated rider down!!
Without a large resort presence of skiers and snowboarders,
carving up virgin snow continuously, is an every day experience!
And that’s just on the gondola serviced terrain –
just wait till you hit the back-country routes!
From the top station, Mount Apherwat’s 5km wide face spreads
before you providing advanced to intermediate skiers and snowboarders
with a number of adrenalin-pumping ridges and runs. Your guide
will advise you where to go for the most exciting, yet safest,
powder run.
As mentioned by our skiers and snowboarders, the resort’s
terrain is truly remarkable and raw. You may even get to see a
snow leopard or a hibernating bear!
With no official trail map and ski-patrol, our all-inclusive package
tours provide you with the services of an experienced local guide
who ensures you experience both a safe, yet personalised, snow-riding
experience.
Gulmarg also provides 3 Poma button-styled lifts for the novice
skier and snowboarder. These are situated alongside the snow covered
golf course, which happens to be highest in the world at 2650m!
HotelsHotel
Highlands Park is one of a handful of hotels operating
in Gulmarg. It’s one of the oldest hotels in Gulmarg and
exhibits a strong colonial charm coupled cottage-like rooms. All
rooms are double with en suite bathrooms, and fully equipped with
linen. A porter regularly warms up the room by firing up the bakari
with wood (pot-bellied stove).
The bar is great place to relax and displays traditional Kashmiri
carpentry. The restaurant is decorated with bear and snow leopard
skins, and serves great traditional Kashmiri food. The hotel prides
itself on being warm and friendly.
The hotel is a 5 minute ski to the gondola.
Hotel Mumtaz has recently been added to our
list of hotels on offer. Much like Hotel Highlands Park, Hotel
Mumtaz offers our guests a warm colonial atmosphere with double
rooms and en suite bathrooms. Hotel Mumtaz is also minutes from
the gondola and serves fabulous Kashmiri and western food..
Hotel Pine Palace is a more modern hotel and
has undergone some recent renovations. All rooms are double with
ensuite bathrooms with linen is supplied.
The food is also great, and the bar offers beer and spirits. The
lounge room is a great place to relax and unwind. Gulmarg’s
only 2 internet connections are available here.
The hotel is a 2 minute ski to the gondola.
